Star Trek : Freelance

To boldly disappear into obscurity.

Freelance was a Star Trek fan project that I started working on back in 2008. The game would take place in the year 2388, nearly 10 years after the movie Star Trek : Nemesis. The player would be reassigned to investigate a region of space on the far edge of Federation space. The player would be given command of a scout ship for this mission and would have a crew that the player could form relationships with. Freelance was essentially a Mass Effect clone but was conceived at round about the same time that Mass Effect was in production.

Sadly it was discontinued for being too ambitious.

History

Freelance V1

Freelance V1 was essentially the Freelance modification for Elite Force. It was largely worked on by me but did have several other contributors during its run. The by the end of its production, the mod primarily consisted of several test maps and dozens of interior spaces. Most the work during this period was design related with very little actual gameplay. To this day the mod is stored in dozens of different versions on my hard drive and is an amalgamated mess that would likely take months to sift through for anything useful, hence the reason I have never released anything further of this incomplete project.

Freelance V2

Freelance V2 was the move from Elite Force to stand alone application. At the time, out of the box game engines like Unity just weren't that available, or in their infancy, otherwise there is a good possibility that this game could have moved ahead at higher speed. I had a single programmer working for me at the time and I couldn't code so this created a significant amount of work. Comman, my programmer, did a terrific job where he could but the project was simply to complex for such a small team. We chose the Irrlight game engine which was a modified version of the quake 3 engine I believe, but even the, there was way too much work to even get a functioning prototype. This version died quickly.

Freelance V3

V3 was started after the official cancellation of Freelance. I learned from this project that unless you have money to put down, running a project when you do not have the skill set to complete it alone is a very bad idea and doomed to failure. I decided to try my hand at producing my own version of Freelance in an external engine, which this time around, ended up being Torque 3D. This is the period when I learned to code using both Torque 3D and Game Maker Studio.

Freelance Teaser : Callum's Dream

In 2009, I released a teaser mod for Freelance that was mainly built to show off some of the locations from the mod. The voice acting was a little sketching and there was a lot of borrow music in it, but you did get to see a lot of the early location designs that would have been used in the main mod. This teaser was built as it's own separate thing and didn't come with any of the advanced RPG elements that were in the core game.

This was the description posted on EFFiles at the time:

  Description

This is what we have been waiting for many months to experience. Modder Griffin Endurance brings us the first playable teaser of the much-anticipated Star Trek: Freelance single player modification for Elite Force 1.

Containing an original storyline created especially for this particular release, you play as Peter Callum, a Starfleet Commander, who has just been given his first command. In this teaser, your mission is to save your crew from a Hader General who for some reason, seems to have a grudge on the player. You will battle your way through various locations and areas, ranging from a Klingon Outpost to an assimilated Starfleet vessel. But is everything as it seems? The situation feels a little... unreal...

This mod does not contain any of the Freelance RPG elements but is more of a tour of some of the locations, weapons and characters. It includes many new maps, such as a set of alien corridors that are... well, completely alien, various areas of the player's very own Starfleet vessel, a Klingon space station, complete with defenders that will assist you, new phaser models, an RPG-X-style rifle and even one of the most popular weapons from EF2: the Enhanced Compression Rifle. The enemies are a mix of what we have seen before, and some new challenges such as the Hader. Special mention must go to the Borg in this teaser, which are probably the most scary and dangerous we have seen them since the original EF1 single player. The voice work is great (including a cameo by yours truly) and music choices from various sources very much add to the atmosphere of each level. To wrap it all up, this teaser even has a splendid little installer. Very professional.

So what's the catch? Well, I found one or two low-quality textures. Um... apart from that... pretty solid all round. I can't actually think of anything to criticise. It ends? But to be fair, the teaser is quite long. Took me half an hour to play through! So you can imagine how much work Griffin Endurance has put into this.

The Freelance Teaser is quite possibly one of the best mod releases in recent EF1 history, and if the full version of the mod is even half as full of quality, we are in for a treat. Download. Now. Or else.
